Brush lettering is a huge trend at the moment and is much easier to do than one might think – in fact, we think anyone can do it! There are a few simple tips and tricks that you can use to get started, and once you have mastered those, the possibilities are endless.
Create beautiful wedding invitations, birthday cards, typography illustrations or use brush lettering in your journal, diary or sketch book. Of course you could use a traditional brush and ink for your lettering but there are many products on the market that are more convenient – brush pens!
Brush pens
Sakura Koi markers are our favourite for brush lettering – they come in a wide range of beautiful, bright colours and are water soluble too! Other markers that work wonderfully for brush lettering are the Copic Ciao markers, Sakura Pigma Brush Pen and the Pentel Pocket Brush pen.
Getting started
Now if you’re wondering how to get started, here is the biggest tip for brush lettering – write using light upstrokes and heavy downstrokes. That’s it really! Once you get going, you’ll get into a rhythm and you can start to experiment with different layouts and flourishes. There are tons of tutorials online which you can check out if you get stuck – such as this one by Joanne Fink or watch this little brush lettering video we shared on our Instagram page a while back.

Have fun!
The most important thing to remember is: have fun! There are no rules when it comes to lettering, just go wild and enjoy yourself. We’d love to see your brush lettering – tag us on social media with #thedeckleedge to stand the chance of being featured!
