The Art of Our Ancestors: San Rock Art

These early artists used natural pigments to paint scenes of their daily lives, spiritual beliefs, and the world around them. The pigments were made from materials found in nature, such as ochre, charcoal, and clays mixed with animal fat or plant sap to create a paint that would endure for thousands of years.
Early humans started making coloured paint 100,000 years ago – right here in South Africa! The oldest known paint-making ‘studio’ was discovered in Blombos Cave 300km from Cape Town, where archaeologists found abalone shells, bones and stones that they believe once served as a toolkit to make paint. Ochre-stained perlemoen shells were found, in which red ochre was ground and mixed with seal fat, charcoal and other ingredients. They also found what is reportedly the world’s oldest recorded human drawing there dating back 75,000 years – an ochre rock engraved with an abstract geometric pattern.
These rock paintings, which can still be seen in locations like the Drakensberg and Cederberg Mountains, are not just art—they are historical records, offering us a window into the lives of the San people and their deep connection with the land. The simplicity of their materials didn’t hinder their creativity; rather, it showcases their ingenuity and the timeless human desire to express and communicate through art.
