There are so many wonderful colouring books out there at the moment with a huge range of designs and styles. There are also so many exciting options for colouring them in! We have put together a selection of our most popular colouring pencils to give you some ideas. These can be used on their own or together to create interesting and fun effects. There are no rules when in comes to colouring in – you don’t even have to stay within the lines!
Coloured Pencils:
Pencils are a great option for colouring in because they can be used in so many ways! Sharpen to a point for fine details, or use them lightly to create gradients and shading. You can easily cover larger areas in colour and they don’t go through the page!
Faber Castell’s Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils are water-soluble so you can create watercolour-like effects by using a brush and water. They are of a very high quality and the colour pigments are excellent. Using watercolour pencils with water also allows for smoother blending so it’s great for those who like to create a sense of realism in their work. You must just be careful to not use too much water or it could cause your paper to become soggy!
Colleen pencil crayons are a bit of an old school classic and you might even remember them from your school days! They offer a lovely selection of colours (some neon colours are included in their bigger sets too!) and and we love their packaging. The pencils are hard but still easy to work with and have a smooth and slightly waxy finish.
Derwent’s Colour Soft pencils are a popular choice as they are soft and work well for blending and layering. They give good coverage without having to apply too much pressure and work well with other colouring mediums and pencils. They colours can appear muted or bright depending on how you use them – bold pops of colour can be added by using a solid stroke.
Watch this space for a second blog post about more colouring tools, that will focus on markers and fineliners.
