If you’re an artist who loves oil painting—or wants to fall in love with it—Schmincke MUSSINI could be the best-kept secret you’ve yet to discover. These paints aren’t just colours in a tube. They’re the result of over 140 years of care, tradition, and chemistry, crafted to help you bring depth, light, and history to your canvas.

The Legacy of Cesare Mussini

Cesare Mussini (1804–1879) was an accomplished Italian painter and respected professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. Renowned for his historical and religious works, he dedicated much of his life to mastering and preserving the techniques of the Old Masters. His deep knowledge of pigment, oil, and resin combinations laid the foundation for what would become Scmincke’s premium artist-grade resin-oil colours. While Mussini didn’t directly create Schmincke’s formulations, his teachings and research served as the inspiration and guide for the MUSSINI line. By naming their premium oil range after him, Schmincke honours his legacy and commitment to brilliance, depth, and artistic tradition.

Glazing: The Secret to That Signature MUSSINI Shine

Want that soft glow and layered depth you see in gallery paintings? MUSSINI makes it easier than ever with 44 specially formulated transparent colours.

Here’s how to glaze effectively with MUSSINI:

  1. Begin with a dry underpainting using opaque or semi-opaque oil colours. Make sure it’s completely dry before glazing.
  2. Select a transparent MUSSINI colour such as Florentine Red, Transparent Madder, Caesar Purple, or Transparent Oxide Brown.
  3. Mix the colour with a glazing medium – we recommend Schmincke Mussini Medium 3 (a lean glazing medium with increased transparency) or Medium W (a water-mixable option if you’re using water-mixable brushes and cleanup).
  4. Apply thin, even layers with a soft brush, allowing each glaze to dry thoroughly before applying the next.
  5. Use the Drying Time Scale (DTS) printed on the brochure to help you plan your layering and drying times.

Glazing with MUSSINI is ideal for building glowing skin tones, luminous skies, reflective water, and rich, dimensional shadows without overpowering the underpaintings with real character

Why Use a Glazing Medium with Transparent Colours?

  1. Thins the Paint Without Losing Binding Strength
A glazing medium allows you to thin the colour to a sheer layer without breaking down the paint film. Thinning with just solvent (like turpentine) can weaken the bond and make the paint brittle over time. Mediums maintain archival quality.
  2. Improves Flow and Levelling
Mediums like Schmincke Mussini Medium 3 or Medium W help your brush glide more smoothly across the canvas, reducing visible brushstrokes and making it easier to create even, luminous layers.
  3. Controls Drying Time
Depending on the medium, you can speed up or slow down drying. This gives you more control when building multiple glazes. MUSSINI colours already dry harmoniously, but the medium fine-tunes that process to suit your pace.
  4. Enhances Transparency and Luminosity
A good glazing medium increases the optical clarity of the colour layer. This helps light pass through and bounce back from the underpainting more effectively, amplifying the signature “MUSSINI glow.”
