Gamblin 16 oz. Oil Painting Ground
Gamblin 16 oz. Oil Painting Ground is a professional white ground formulated specifically for oil painting, creating a strong, flexible and non absorbent surface that enhances colour brilliance and brush response. Unlike traditional acrylic gesso, this oil ground is designed to bond properly with oil paint, providing excellent adhesion and long term stability. It creates a bright, smooth painting surface that allows colours to remain rich and luminous while offering a slightly silky tooth. The 16 oz. size is ideal for artists preparing their own canvases, panels or boards and wanting greater control over their painting surface.
How to Use
Surface preparation
Apply Gamblin 16 oz. Oil Painting Ground to a properly sized surface. If working on raw canvas or linen, first apply a suitable size to seal the fibres before adding the oil ground.
Application
Stir thoroughly before use. Apply a thin, even coat using a brush or roller. Allow to dry fully before sanding lightly if a smoother surface is desired. A second coat can be applied for a more refined finish.
Drying time
Oil grounds require longer drying times than acrylic gesso. Allow adequate drying time according to studio conditions before beginning to paint.
Painting
Once dry, paint directly with oil colours for improved adhesion, depth and luminosity.
Tip
Plan ahead when preparing surfaces, as oil ground takes time to cure properly. Preparing panels in advance ensures they are ready when inspiration strikes.
