SOLD OUT: Air Drying Sculpture Workshop (03 June 2023)

The Deckle Edge is excited to offer an upcoming air-drying clay sculpture workshop for anyone interested in exploring the world of three-dimensional art.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn the practicalities of working with air-drying clay and the unique qualities it possesses. Air-drying clay shares some qualities with other sculpting materials, such as its malleability and ability to hold detail, but it also has unique qualities such as its ability to dry and harden without the need for a kiln or firing process. The workshop will explore these specific qualities of air-drying clay and how to work with them effectively to create successful sculptures. The workshop will also emphasize how to create sculptures at home using everyday items that are easily accessible.

During the workshop, you’ll learn the importance of creating an armature to support your clay creations and how to design one that best suits your needs. We’ll also discuss the pros and cons of working from a physical, three-dimensional reference versus a two-dimensional reference, with a particular focus on the benefits of working from a physical object.

Attendees will have access to a range of 3D objects to use as reference material, but you’re also welcome to bring your own small items to use as a reference. The instructor will demonstrate how to create simple, homemade tools to assist you in creating your artwork.

By the end of the workshop, attendees will leave with a small clay creation of their own and a newfound understanding of the endless possibilities of air-drying clay as a medium for three-dimensional art.
