In this workshop, attendees will learn the basics of drawing a portrait from an old master’s photocopy as a reference. Learn pencil techniques, how to notice line and shadow in life, and interpret that onto a page. Andrew will help you take the basics of this medium and to begin your portrait drawing journey.

Date: Saturday, August 13th – 2022
Time: 9:00 – 12:30 ( 3.5 hours)
Place: The Deckle Edge @ 13 Brickfield Road, Salt River
Workshops space limited booking essential

All materials are included in the price and provided by facilitator;
(You may bring your own materials from home as well)
•    HB, 2B, 6B Pencils
•    Putty Erasers
•    Any textured A3 papers (2 per artist)

Please Bring: A3 photocopy of an Old Masters Work that you like with lots of lights and darks
(If not possible some references will be provided on the day)

Recommended age: All welcome from 15 years and up.

What you will learn:
The artists will learn all these works from the copies of other old master drawings. These drawings teach many things, primarily the range of values of the lights and the darks within the form.

About the facilitator: For Andrew Mokgatla art and drawing came naturally. He was praised when young for his talent, but the pursuit of being a professional artist was a foreign concept in his township community. Andrew went against the grain and pursued an art education; he graduated with a National Diploma in Fine Arts from the Free State University of Technology. Andrew currently has a studio in Muizenberg that serves a hub for his illustration, painting, and facilitation work.
