Encaustic For Beginners

Join us for a captivating journey into the ancient art of encaustic painting. In the morning session, you’ll embark on an exploration of heated encaustic medium, comprised of beeswax and damar resin, as you learn to create luminous artworks on birchwood panels.

What You’ll Learn

  • Discover the vibrant world of color pigments and learn how to integrate them seamlessly into your encaustic creations.
  • Master the techniques of applying encaustic medium to create smooth, primed surfaces, and experiment with basic textures.
  • Create four stunning artworks under the guidance of an experienced instructor, each a testament to your newfound skills and creativity.

Date: Saturday, 31 Aug – 2024
Time: 8.30 – 12.00 (3.5 hours)
Place: The Deckle Edge @ 13 Brickfield Road, Salt River

About the facilitatior:

The course is presented by Marina Wilbraham that has been presenting encaustic art classes in Gauteng, Cape Town, Knysna, Bloemfontein and Stilbaai since 2019 and established Encaustry (Pty) Ltd that provides encaustic art supplies and promote encaustic art in South Africa.

*Encaustic art, derived from the Greek word “enkaustikos,” meaning “to burn in,” is a painting technique that involves using heated beeswax to which coloured pigments are added. This molten mixture is then applied to a surface—usually wood, though canvas and other materials can also be used. The key characteristic of encaustic art is the use of heat at various stages of the process, both to fuse the wax onto the surface and to manipulate the wax once it’s applied, creating textures and effects that are unique to this medium.
