Under the expert guidance of Andrew, you’ll focus on drawing the head and shoulders, translating the three-dimensional form into a two-dimensional portrait. What attendees will learn:

In this workshop, we’ll work together to sharpen your ability to observe and depict a live model. You’ll learn how to translate the subtle details of the head and shoulders into a lifelike portrait on paper, including understanding the model’s individual features, capturing the way light interacts with their face and shoulders, and conveying their presence and personality in your charcoal or graphite drawing. Andrew will share techniques and tips that cater to both beginners and experienced artists, helping you to create portraits that are both realistic and expressive. By the end, you’ll feel more confident in your ability to bring out the true character of your subject in your artwork.

Materials supplied by facilitator:

  • Charcoal & graphite
  • Paper
  • Putty Eraser
  • Live Fully Clothed Male Model

About the facilitatior:

Andrew Mokgatla is an active fine arts professional, published illustrator, former high school educator, and facilitator who has endeavoured to tell both his own and others’ narratives through his work over the years. By applying a range of artistic skills across numerous solo and collaborative projects, he has worked hard to establish a reputable name for himself in the industry.
