Toning, a transformative process, allows cyanotypes to transcend their characteristic blue hues. Through the application of organic tannins, such as tea, coffee, rosemary, and wine, these prints can adopt rich browns, sepia tones, subtle grays, and even hints of greens or purples. 

Date: Saturday, March 2nd – 2024

Includes all materials (please bring your own apron):

All necessary materials will be provided for the workshop. Additionally, attendees are welcome to bring their own cyanotype prints if they wish to experiment further with toning effects.

  • A selection of cyanotypes to tone
  • toning tannins (tea, coffee, rosemary etc)
  • trays
  • bleaching agent
  • Paper towel

What you will learn:

Participants will engage in hands-on experimentation with a provided assortment of pre-made cyanotypes, delving into the distinctive toning outcomes produced by various organic agents. Moreover, this workshop provides a unique avenue to attain sepia and muted tones, all through the comparatively cost-effective cyanotype method as opposed to pricier alternative processes reliant on silver-based techniques.

About the facilitatior:

My name is Chloe, nickname ‘Cleo’, and I am a visual artist and workshop instructor living and working in Cape Town, South Africa. I graduated with a BA (Fine Art) from Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2014 and completed my Masters in Visual Art through UNISA in 2021.
I have exhibited my work in various venues and galleries in Cape Town and abroad, including AVA Gallery, Youngblood Gallery, State of the Art Galley, Gallery ONE 11 and Art B Gallery, as well as Casa Petrarca, Figline Valdarno and Studio BONG in Florence, Italy, and at The Small Print Co. in London.
I regularly host cyanotype workshops, as well as other alternative photographic workshops such as Lumen, Phytogram and Polaroid Emulsion Lift workshops.
