Deckle Paper Making Workshop (9 December 2023)

In this workshop, attendees will learn how to create hand-made paper by up-cycling different forms of paper that may be lying around at home. This might include old notepad sheets, pages from books and magazines, or paper offcuts. Attendees will learn how to blend these into a pulp and ultimately create new, crafty sheets of paper, complete with deckle edges. Attendees will learn tips about how to create and use a paper making deckle, as well as what other easily found items could be used to make paper. We will consider what factors contribute to paper thickness, different coloration techniques, and even play with the effects that can be achieved by incorporating glitter and small botanicals .

Date: Saturday, Dec 9th – 2023
Time: 9:00 – 12:30 ( 3.5 hours)
Place: The Deckle Edge @ 13 Brickfield Road, Salt River
Workshops space limited booking essential

All materials are included in the price and provided by me; 

  • a Paper Making Deckle
  • A Blender
  • Paper Pulp
  • An assortment of papers, paints, glitters, and plant debris
  • Drying Boards and Cloths
  • Paper Towel
  • Rags
  • Heat Gun/ Hair Dryer

Attendees are welcome to bring any scrap papers or debris (such as flower petals or small seeds) that they would like to incorporate into their papers. 

Recommended age: All welcome from 15 years and up.

About the facilitatior:

My name is Chloe, nickname ‘Cleo’, and I am a visual artist and workshop instructor living and working in Cape Town, South Africa. I graduated with a BA (Fine Art) from Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2014 and completed my Masters in Visual Art through UNISA in 2021.
I have exhibited my work in various venues and galleries in Cape Town and abroad, including AVA Gallery, Youngblood Gallery, State of the Art Galley , Gallery ONE 11 and Art B Gallery, as well as Casa Petrarca, Figline Valdarno and Studio BONG  in Florence, Italy, and at The Small Print Co. in London.
I regularly host cyanotype workshops, as well as other alternative photographic workshops such as Lumen, Phytogram and Polaroid Emulsion Lift workshops.
