Gelli Plate Printing Workshop With Cleo (Sat 3 Oct ’26)
Join us for a creative morning exploring the versatile world of Gelli Plate printmaking!
In this workshop, you’ll focus on two core techniques: botanical printing and image transfers. Using printmaking inks for botanical prints and acrylics for image transfers, you’ll explore monoprinting in a hands-on, playful way, no traditional press required.
With botanical printing, you’ll work with foliage, flowers, and natural textures to create delicate impressions, bold silhouettes, and organic patterns on the Gelli plate, producing everything from bold to subtle, intricate compositions.
For image transfers, you’ll use acrylics to lift and transfer printed imagery onto paper via the Gelli plate. This technique allows you to combine photographic elements with botanical forms, producing unique, mixed-media prints that are textured, painterly, and sometimes delightfully unpredictable.
Whether you’re new to printmaking or looking to expand your creative toolkit, this workshop provides an engaging introduction to the possibilities of Gelli printing.

What you will learn:
- Creating botanical monoprints using foliage and natural textures with inks
- Image transfer techniques using acrylics and printed images
- Approaches to colour, composition, and visual depth
- Tips for achieving prints that feel both painterly and graphic
All materials will be provided, including:
- Gelli plates & rollers
- Printed imagery for transfers
- Iris Acrylics, Speedball, and Cranfield inks
- Brushes & an assortment of botanicals
- Fine art paper

About the facilitatior:
My name is Chloe, nickname ‘Cleo’, and I am a visual artist and workshop instructor living and working in Cape Town, South Africa. I graduated with a BA (Fine Art) from Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2014 and completed my Masters in Visual Art through UNISA in 2021.
I have exhibited my work in various venues and galleries in Cape Town and abroad, including AVA Gallery, Youngblood Gallery, State of the Art Galley, Gallery ONE 11 and Art B Gallery, as well as Casa Petrarca, Figline Valdarno and Studio BONG in Florence, Italy, and at The Small Print Co. in London.
I regularly host cyanotype workshops, as well as other alternative photographic workshops such as Lumen, Phytogram and Polaroid Emulsion Lift workshops.
* Monotype printing is a form of printmaking in which the artist creates a unique, one-of-a-kind print. Unlike other printmaking techniques, such as etching or woodcut, where multiple copies of an image can be produced, each monotype is a singular piece of art.
The resulting print is characterized by its unique qualities, often showcasing expressive and spontaneous marks. Since each monotype is a one-time impression, artists are drawn to this technique for its unpredictability and the ability to experiment with different textures, colors, and techniques in each print. Monotype printing allows for a great deal of artistic freedom and creativity, making it a versatile and dynamic form of printmaking.
