Knysna: Introduction to Soft Pastels Workshop with Bev (30 May ’26)

A hands on introduction to soft pastel, various brands of pastel pencils, a few soft and hard pastel sticks as well as various pastel papers.

What you will learn:

This introductory workshop on soft pastel will take you through the various types of soft pastel available as well as which paper to use. You will learn how to blend colours together, apply with various applicators, use blending stumps and Sofft tools as well as sponges and brushes. You will learn how to apply pastel add alcohol and paint in the background.

Date: Sat, May 30th 2026
Time: 9:00 – 12:30 (3.5 hours)
Place: The Deckle Edge Knysna, 19 Queen Street
Workshop space is limited so booking is essential

Materials supplied for use in the workshop:

  • Comprehensive notes
  • 2 x A4 piece of Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper
  • 1 x A5 piece of Clairefontaine Pastelmat
  • Copier paper for blending
  • Various Panpastel colours
  • Various Pastel pencils
  • Various soft pastel sticks
  • Various hard pastel sticks
  • Cretacolour white pastel stick
  • A piece of kneaded eraser.
  • A tombow eraser
  • Sofft tool applicators
  • Sofft tool sponges
  • Various brushes for blending
  • Masking tape
  • ISO-Propyl Alcolhol for background exercise

Student to bring:

Apron, 30cm ruler, a notebook & pen to make notes, any soft pastels they wish to try out

Recommended age: All welcome from 16 years and up.

About the facilitator:

Bev Barends is a self taught artist working from her home studio in Plettenberg Bay. She specialises in charcoal and graphite. Bev works mainly on commissions and teaching workshops. She’s passionate about teaching people to draw and paint and find their unique style to start their art journey. She is also a finalist in the 2026 Wildlife Competition by Fine Art Gallery, Namibia for her pastel owl.
