Jay Gee –
Although I’m a beginner oil painter, I wanted a paint that was a cut above any being sold as obviously student grade, so that I could have as much of the artist experience as possible. The range of oil paints is bewildering. I was aware of the differences in pigment load and additives, but also in pricing, comparing lower-end with often painfully expensive artist grade. Researching the well-known names, I settled on Lukas Studio – it is inexpensive by comparison, and I’ve found their paints to be consistent, rich and high intensity. Having since used a top brand’s runny student grade, I can say that Lukas is definitely not one of them – its tinting strength is higher, and I’ve even had to reach for a tube of Lukas when a professional brand of titanium white couldn’t do the job. I’ve had no issues with this brand, and look forward to upgrading to the 1862 range when I make a stronger commitment to oils.
