Old Masters Landscape Oil Painting Workshop With Jacques (25th-26th Sept ’26)
Introduction to Landscape painting.
Learn how to compose a landscape painting with Jacques Viljoen. In this workshop you will learn how to approach landscape painting through a series of small studies, teaching you the basics of composition, colour theory, paint application, along with a structured approach that can be applied to studio or plein air work. On the second day, you will create a master copy of any landscape to your choosing, applying the methodology learned the day before.
Date: Friday, 25th and Saturday, 26th Sept – 2026
Day 1:
We will begin with a discussion about materials before learning how to prepare our own canvas that will be used on the second day. We will then talk about composition and create a few small composition sketches in pencil, focusing first on line, then on value, in order to learn how to simplify the landscape into its most basic parts. Bring pencil and paper for this. We will then move onto a series of small oil sketches, where we will produce a number of small simplified sketches, teaching us about colour value relationships and paint application. You can paint from photos or imagination for this.
Jacques will also share a few useful paint mixing tips, giving beginners a good place to start from, and more experienced painters may learn a few new colour combinations to add to their palate.
The first day will be rounded off with a demonstration, where Jacques will begin a master copy painting, showing you step by step how he approaches landscape painting.
Day 2: Instead of copying a photograph of a landscape, we will attempt to copy a photograph of a plein air oil painting. These paintings were done quickly, usually in one session while outdoors. While we won’t have the elements to contend with, we will try to finish our work in the same amount of time as plein air painters, by applying everything we have learned to speed up the process.
The artist you choose to copy is up to you, or you can use a print out provided by us. Your painting will be done on a 1:1 scale of your reference photo, so don’t go bigger than A4 or 30cm x 40cm. Some artist’s to look at are Monet, Shishkin, Levitan or Carot. You may need to seek permission from living artist’s to copy their work.

- Time to shop for any materials you dont have yet and have lunch
- Painting
Times Day 2: 9am – 12pm
- Morning painting session
Place: The Deckle Edge @ 13 Brickfield Road, Salt River

(The Deckle Edge will provide paper, have some oil brushes and a small selection of oils available to use on the day but it is recommended to buy your own or bring from home so as to continue your artworks)
Recommended Materials List (Students to bring their own materials from home or purchase prior to the workshop there will be some Maimeri oil paints and some brushes on the day:
Deckle Edge has a range of supplies available at various price points and Jacques will advise and recommend on what materials you should get.
The Deckle Edge provides a number of canvases and canvas boards that you can purchase at the start of the workshop. Here is a list of materials for the workshop:
- A pencil. If you are new to drawing, get a hard 2H pencil, a medium HB pencil and a soft 4B pencil
- Paper or Sketchbook
- Oil paper or spare canvas for small studies.
- A4 or 30cm x 40cm canvas or canvas board
- A pallet. The bigger the better.
- A pallet knife, preferably teardrop shaped.
- Artist’s Turpentine
- Linseed Oil
- A cup for medium
- An assortment of filbert (flat and round) longhandled hogs hair brushes of various sizes. The more you have the better. You can add a few square brushes if you like
- At least three soft synthetic long handled filbert brushes, of small medium and large sizes.
Here is a list of oil paints commonly used in landscape painting. This is a basic palette and you can add any colour you like to it, except black.

- Alizarin Crimson
- Cadmium Red
- Burnt Siena
- Yellow Ochre
- Cadmium YellowTitanium White OR Soft Mixing White
- Optional: Transparent Red Oxide for imprimatura
- Optional: Raw Umber for drawing or imprimatura
With this set up, you will have everything you need to go home and make your own landscape paintings.

About the facilitatior:
Jacques Viljoen is a professional representational artist, known for working exclusively from life. He holds a BA in fine art from UCT and has graduated from The Florence Academy of Art in Italy, where he studied advanced painting. He is represented by Chander House in South Africa and has exhibited at the South African Portrait Awards finals and the Royal Society of Portrait painters in London. In 2023 he completed a full year’s residency at The Iziko National Gallery of South Africa, where he primarily copied master’s paintings.
