Come and learn from a true pastel artist. Learn how to paint complex portraits using soft pastels from start to finish. Chris will teach the techniques of colour mixing and painting with chalk pastels.

Date: 12 November

Time: 9:30am – 12:30

What attendees will learn:

  • Tips for setting up and lighting
  • Mixing skin tones colours accurately and capturing a likeness
  • Working from a live model with hands-on instruction

Materials required: There will be some basic materials supplied by the Deckle Edge but you are welcome to bring your own or purchase on the day

  • Pastels (basic range to use on the day supplied)
  • Pastel surface (supplied)
  • Kneaded eraser (supplied)
  • Sketching tool (charcoal, white charcoal pencil, or pastel pencil)

In this workshop you will learn some of the secrets of pastel painting with explanations of techniques and demos. Learn methods that produce better results, and also why they work, giving you a deeper understanding of pastel and art in general.

Creating art should be fun, not frustrating. Chris balances encouragement with skill-building to push your art forward. This will be the perfect workshop to start your pastel journey or improve whatever skills you already have.

About The Instructor:
Christopher Reid is the author or “Pastel Painting: The comprehensive guide to soft pastels.” He has been painting for over 30 years and has won over 500 international art awards. He paints all subjects and favours pastels, acrylics, and watercolors. His paintings have been described as “contemporary realism with an emphasis on color and depth.” He lives in Hermanus and is often seen plein air painting.
