About the facilitatior:

Jacques Viljoen is a professional representational artist working primarily in oil and exclusively from life. He studied drawing and painting at The Florence Academy of Art and has a BA (hons.) in Fine Art, painting, from UCT.  Viljoen is best known for his atmospheric plein air paintings of The Cape but also works in still life and portraiture, having exhibited at the Royal Institute of Portrait Painters in the UK and the South African Portrait Awards Top 40 exhibitions. In 2023, Viljoen completed a year-long residency at the Iziko National Gallery in Cape Town.

* Alla prima is a painting technique where the artist completes a painting in one sitting, working “wet-on-wet.” Instead of letting layers of paint dry between applications, the paint is applied directly and blended while still wet. The result is often fresh and spontaneous, with visible brushstrokes and a more immediate feel. It’s also called “direct painting.

* Imprimatura is a thin, initial layer of paint applied to a canvas or surface before starting a painting. It helps create a base tone and makes it easier to build up layers of colour. It’s like giving your canvas a slight tint to work from, instead of starting on a blank white surface.

A pochade box is a small, portable painting box that artists use for painting outdoors, especially for plein air painting. It usually has space to store paints, brushes, and a palette, and it often includes a panel or canvas holder so you can paint directly on it. It’s like a mini art studio you can easily carry around with you!
