A guided hands-on workshop identifying the lightest lights and darkest shadows of a portrait through both the negative space and shapes by mark making in charcoal and white pastel on pastel paper.
What you will learn:
In this class you will learn the exciting ways of identifying the shapes that make up the portrait through mark making, blending and applying the charcoal and pastel onto the paper. You will learn ways to apply what you see accurately onto the paper from the photo. You will also learn to darken the deepest shadows and lighten the lightest lights. You will learn how to apply the charcoal and pastel through tonal values, as well as blending and lifting.
Date: Saturday, May 31st 2025
Time: 9:00 – 13:00 (4 hours)
Place: The Deckle Edge Knysna, 19 Queen Street
Workshop space is limited so booking is essential
Materials supplied for use in the workshop:
- Comprehensive notes
- An A4 piece of Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper
- Newsprint paper to practice on
- Charcoal pencils (preferably Generals)
- Vine charcoal
- Cretacolor White pastel stick
- A piece of kneaded eraser.
- A Tombow eraser
- A hard eraser

Recommended age: All welcome from 16 years and up.
About the facilitator:
Bev Barends is a self taught artist working from her home studio in Plettenberg Bay. She specialises in charcoal, graphite and coloured pencils. Bev works mainly on commissions and teaching workshops. She’s passionate about teaching people to draw and find their unique style to start their art journey.
