SOLD OUT: Portrait Painting Workshop in Oils

Come and learn how to create a portrait in oils!

In this class, you will work with oil paints to explore the wonderful medium of oil paint. Attendees will be guided through the basics of proportions, colour mixing and form.

  • Date: Saturday, May 28th – 2022
  • Time: 8:30 – 12:30 (4 hours)
  • Place: The Deckle Edge @ 13 Brickfield Road, Salt River
  • Workshops are capped at 12 people

What you will learn at the workshop

  • Draw the portrait on canvas using brush and paint
  • Scale, position and proportions
  • Establish the values
  • Establish the colour temperature
  • Colour mixing of skin tones 
  • Form Painting

Material Requirements:

You may bring your own supplies from home or if you dont have any or just need to top up please try to purchase these materials prior to the workshop so that you are ready to start. There is a lot to cover in the 4 hours.

  1. Canvas min. A3 in size
  2. Brushes from 5mm to 40mm, at least four in this size range.  40/50mm Hake brush
  3. Table easel ( you may bring your own otherwise there will be some available on the day)
  4. Palette and palette knife
  5. Odourless turps or solvent
  6. Container for turps
  7. Rags (old t-shirt material is perfect
  8. Toilet paper – 2 ply
  9. Apron
  10. Picture – but not of a family member – looking face-on printed to A4 size
  11. Basic colours needed
  • Cad Red
  • Cad Yellow
  • Ultramarine Blue / Cobalt Blue
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Burnt Umber
  • Titanium White

About the facilitator: Elizabeth Pearson has been painting professionally for close on 20 years.  

Today she continues to learn as well as teach others the pleasure of creating through the medium of oil.

She has had the good fortune of learning from some of the most creative minds and these artists continue to encourage her in her art career.

Although her subject matter varies, her preferred choices are portraits and figures.  Coming a close second are interesting places, places that have a history which can be captured on canvas.

Currently the President of the South African Society of Artists she is also a member of the Constantiaberg Art Society.  Her work has regularly been selected for the prestigious SASA Annual and Merit exhibitions and she has also had work in the top 200 of the Sanlam Portrait Awards.

She exhibits at the gallery in Kirstenbosch gardens, as well as private galleries in Cape Town.
