What you will learn:
Begin your journey to mastering the art of transforming everyday scenes into artworks. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to observe urban scenes looking for captivating elements, understand composition and perspective, and develop your sketches using a blend of basic ink outlines and expressive watercolour layers. You’ll also refine your work with detailed ink techniques, turning even the most mundane street corner into a magical visual narrative.
About the facilitatior:
Charl Marais grew up on a farm in the Karoo; vast semi-desert Western central part of South Africa. Between the rocks and dust of this ancient landscape he developed a sense of spiritual awareness and the magic of life that would later lead him down the path of architecture and later art. He was trained as an architect at the University of the Free State, South Africa, between 1998 to 2002. Already, during his architectural studies he had explored the philosophical and artistic dimensions in the field of architecture. Charl has always been inspired by the phenomenological experience of space and art in general. Having always had a passion for travel, he’s explored the world extensively and throughout his career he developed his skill as an artist through the medium of Urban Sketching. Whenever he explores a new part of the world, he would capture the spaces and the architecture of that terrain by sketching or turning the experience into quick watercolour studies. This style of work has later informed and shaped his artistic style. While working as an architect in Cape town and Dublin (Ireland) he gradually started to dive deeper into the world of Fine Art.
