Supporting our communities through creativity!

The Deckle Edge is a part of many creative communities across South Africa. We love supporting our creative family and friends. The Deckle Edge offers discounts to Art Society members, schools and scholars. We also donate creative supplies to charities that aim to make a difference in our communities.

Please read our blog on some of the projects we have supported and consider giving them a visit. We encourage you to support them in any way that you are able to.

The Knysna Animal Welfare Society (KAWS) – Mural and Fundraiser

The Deckle Edge sponsored paints towards the KAWS beautification project. This culminated in an Art wall unveiling at KAWS HQ and an exhibition. A percentage of art sales were donated to help the Knysna Animal Welfare Society.

Knysna artist and art teacher Faith Du Plessis and students from her studio, The Art House Knysna, worked tirelessly to produce whimsical portraits of animals on boards that now cover the external fencing at KAWS. This art wall also is a part of the Knysna Art Project.

Faith explains that this was just the beginning of the project. “We wanted to support KAWS and brighten their environment, but our enthusiasm grew with each painting we completed on the boards,” she explained. “When we realised that we have an opportunity to also raise some much needed funds for KAWS, we decided to produce these individual portraits and make them available for sale.”

We loved supporting this initiative and so happy to see the beautiful art created in support of animal welfare.

Hope Town Ocean View – Community Centre

HopeTown is a dynamic Ocean View youth movement, founded by Doris & Stefano Lindsay in 2016. Bringing a sense of hope and purpose to at-risk and often traumatised young people, through creative education, healthy community and mentoring.

Exploring life through creativity is a very important part in HopeTown. Every week several art lessons are held in the youth centre and young people of different age groups can learn to use the tool of painting to unlock their potential.

One of our favourite artists, Kim Black, is an Art Educator for Hope Town. We assisted by sponsoring some acrylic paints for their Art Education initiative.

Previous projects we supported

The Lalela Project

The Lalela Project provides educational arts for at-risk youth to spark creative thinking and awaken the entrepreneurial spirit.

We were lucky enough to be involved in supplying art materials through funds raised by @thewrendesign #artober campaign as well as donating a whole van full of slightly fire – damaged stock from our Salt River branch.

Go and check out Lalela to see some amazing people working hard to bring art to those less fortunate .

The Butterfly Art Project

The Butterfly Art Project train and mentor a movement of Community Art Facilitators (CAFs) to provide psycho-social support through art therapeutic classes to children in under-resourced South African communities.

The Deckle Edge was fortunate enough to assist them through art supply donations and having a dedicated donations box in store for community contributions.
