At The Deckle Edge, our name is more than just a label—it’s a reflection of our commitment to quality and uniqueness in the art world. The term deckle edge originates from the traditional process of papermaking. It refers to the feathered edges of paper left untrimmed during manufacturing, distinguishing handcrafted papers from machine-cut ones. This feature is often associated with high-quality, artisan papers and is cherished for its aesthetic appeal and tactile quality.

The Derivation of deckle edge
The word deckle itself is believed to derive from the Dutch word dekken, meaning to cover. Historically, the deckle was the frame or border that contained the paper pulp on the mold. As the pulp spread within this frame, it would occasionally seep under the edges, creating the characteristic rough edges once the paper was dried. These edges, not only served a practical purpose in papermaking but also came to symbolize the craftsmanship and the bespoke nature of the product.
In embracing “The Deckle Edge” as our namesake, we aim to evoke the same sense of artistry and individuality in every product we offer and every workshop we host. From professional artists to casual creators, our store is a space where everyone can find the tools they need to express their unique visions.

There’s also “Deckle Etch” and “Deckle Doodle,” which bring a playful touch to our art-focused atmosphere. Each quirky nickname only adds to the charm and community feel of our store, reminding us of the joy and creativity that art brings into our lives.
