We’re thrilled to announce that The Deckle Edge Knysna is moving to the historic Outeniqua Building at the corner of Queen and Pitt Streets, with our grand re-opening on 1 November 2024. This new space will mark an exciting chapter for us, and we’re eager to welcome you to our fresh new retail location!
Why the Move?
When we learned that our current building was being sold, we knew we needed to find a new home — and we couldn’t have asked for a better one than the Outeniqua Building, lovingly refurbished by Anton Gerber. Helena Gerber his wife, a member of the Knysna Art Society and owner of Art on Queen, introduced us to this gem, and it quickly became clear that this was the perfect space for The Deckle Edge.
The New Creative Hub on Queen Street
The move isn’t just about a new address — it’s about becoming part of the vibrant artistic revival happening in this area. Anton and Helena have truly transformed Queen Street and surrounds into a destination for art and small businesses. It all started with their Art Café on Queen, which quickly became a local favourite with its unique blue walls and eclectic vibe. Their passion for renovating and improving the area has now extended to refurbishing several neighbouring buildings, including our new home.

ANTON ON HIS VISION FOR THE AREA: Deckle Edge has been part of the arts in Knysna for many years. My wife (an artist herself) chaired the revival of the art society and was very involved in the mission of Knysna municipality and Visit Knysna to recreate Knysna to the ‘arty town’ it used to be. My passion for fixing old buildings fitted hand in hand with their mission. Queen Street has been the home of heritage buildings like the old gaol (now a museum and art gallery), the circles in the forest art project by the art society, and Art on Queen gallery and coffee shop. So adding Deckle Edge to the mix can only be a positive addition. With the projects that my son and I would be continuing in the area, we hope to make it a vibrant area to live and/or shop. Queen Street should become a safe creative space for all tourists to wander around, and artists to display their work!
The space around us is blossoming with small shops, from leather craftsmen to unique gift stores, all contributing to a lively creative hub. You’ll also spot the striking ‘Kringe in ’n Bos’ mural, inspired by the work of local author Dalene Matthee, which brings a splash of colour to Knysna’s historic CBD.
The Hardest Part: Leaving Our Beloved Mermaid
One of the toughest decisions we had to make was leaving behind our beautiful mermaid mural, which we had commissioned from local artist Lance Khoury. This stunning piece of art became a beloved landmark in Knysna and a highlight of the annual Knysna Art Walk during the Oyster Festival. Lance’s talent brought so much character to our old space, and the mural became a part of the town’s identity.
With the upcoming move, we knew there was only one artist who could create the mural for our new location — Lance! From the start, Anton made sure a wall was available for our mermaid. With a new brief in hand — to reimagine her as the “Queen Mermaid of Knysna” as she moves to Queen Street — Lance has delivered another masterpiece. I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous asking him to take on the challenge of creating an even better mural, but he’s truly outdone himself!

What to Expect at Our New Location
At our new home, you’ll find the same fantastic range of art supplies, including paints, canvas, drawing materials, and craft essentials. And just like before, if you’re after something specific that we don’t have in stock, we’ll happily arrange for it to be sent from our Salt River Megastore in Cape Town.
We’re also excited to be expanding certain ranges as well as bringing in some new, never-before-offered products, giving you even more options to fuel your creativity!

Closing Dates for the Move
We’ll be closing our doors from 28 October to 31 October 2024 to complete the move. We may even open sooner depending on how smoothly everything goes, so keep an eye out for updates!
