July is Watercolour Month at The Deckle Edge, and we’re delighted to introduce a beautiful new range to our shelves and online store: Maimeri Blu Watercolours.
Known and loved by professional artists around the world, Maimeri Blu watercolours offer exceptional colour brilliance, pure pigments, and remarkable transparency. This month we’ve expanded our watercolour offering with 90 stunning Maimeri Blu colours, giving artists even more possibilities for creating luminous washes, expressive paintings, and vibrant colour mixes.
First Impressions: Putting Maimeri Blu to the Test
When a new watercolour range arrives at The Deckle Edge, we don’t just unpack it and place it on the shelves. We paint with it.
Deckle Edge team members Kat and Amber recently spent some time exploring the colours using the Maimeri Blu dot card, featuring colours including Sandal Red, Golden Yellow and Ultramarine Light.

The immediate impression was one of vibrancy. The colours activate beautifully with water and deliver rich, clean pigment that remains luminous even when diluted.
Want to try the colours for yourself? We have complimentary Maimeri Blu dot cards available in our Cape Town store while stocks last. Simply ask one of our team members and explore a selection of Maimeri Blu colours before choosing your favourites. It’s a wonderful way to experience the vibrancy, transparency and mixing qualities of these beautiful Italian watercolours firsthand.
Kat’s Experience
Kat found the paints a pleasure to work with from the very first brushstroke.
“The colours were incredible to use with fantastic pigmentation. They’re brilliant, vibrant, easy to blend and easy to layer. I love the grain and the purity of each pigment. The colours don’t become muddy, yet they work together seamlessly.”
Using the Maimeri Blu colours, Kat created two beautiful fox studies that showcase the range’s ability to achieve both delicate transitions and bold colour intensity.
One of the qualities that stood out most was how cleanly the colours mixed. Watercolour artists know that some paints can quickly lose their clarity when combined, but Maimeri Blu colours maintain their character while still blending harmoniously together.

Amber’s Experience
Amber was equally impressed by the new range.
She particularly enjoyed the way the colours flowed across the paper and how naturally they blended together.
“I love the way the paints blend. The colours flow together so well and are incredibly fun to experiment with. I’d definitely love to add some Maimeri Blu colours to my own watercolour collection.”
Inspired by the playful nature of the paints, Amber created a whimsical scene featuring a fairy bear in a garden. The painting allowed her to explore soft colour transitions, layered washes and imaginative colour combinations.

What Makes Maimeri Blu Special?
Founded in Italy in 1923 by renowned impressionist painter Gianni Maimeri, the Maimeri brand was born from a simple ambition: to create paints that would satisfy an artist’s own pursuit of excellence. Dissatisfied with the quality of paints available at the time, Maimeri set out to develop colours that offered superior purity, permanence and performance.
The Maimeri Blu watercolour range continues that tradition today. Each colour is formulated using carefully selected pigments and premium Kordofan gum arabic, widely regarded as one of the finest natural binders available for watercolour paint. This exceptionally clear and elastic binder allows the pigments to shine with remarkable brilliance while remaining completely water-soluble.
Many colours in the range are formulated using single pigments wherever possible, making them especially attractive to artists who enjoy colour mixing. The result is a palette that offers excellent transparency, vibrant washes, clean colour mixtures and outstanding lightfastness.
Artists often compare Maimeri Blu favourably with some of the world’s most respected professional watercolour brands, praising the range for its luminosity, colour strength and beautifully balanced handling characteristics.
Why Single-Pigment Watercolours Matter
One of the reasons Maimeri Blu is so highly regarded among watercolour artists is its strong commitment to pigment purity. While single-pigment colours are not unusual in professional watercolour ranges, Maimeri’s dedication to using single pigments wherever possible makes the range especially appealing to artists who enjoy colour mixing.
Single-pigment watercolours generally produce cleaner, brighter and more predictable mixes, helping artists avoid the muddy results that can sometimes occur when mixing colours made from multiple pigments.
For artists building a palette, exploring colour theory or simply looking for greater control over their mixes, Maimeri Blu offers an excellent painting experience. The colours retain their clarity, blend beautifully together and allow each pigment’s unique character to shine through.
It’s one of the qualities that both Kat and Amber enjoyed most when testing the range, finding the colours vibrant, easy to mix and wonderfully luminous on paper.

A Great Time to Explore Watercolour
Watercolour is a medium full of surprises. The interaction between pigment, water and paper creates effects that are often impossible to achieve in any other medium.
One of the joys of introducing a new watercolour range is discovering how each colour behaves. Some colours create soft glowing washes. Others build rich layers. Some granulate subtly, while others flow effortlessly across the page.
That’s part of the magic.
If you’ve been curious about trying a new professional watercolour brand, June’s Watercolour Month is the perfect opportunity to explore what Maimeri Blu has to offer.
